Gene Campaign’s next hearing of its ongoing Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court, asking for an improved regulatory system for GMOs

 

Gene Campaign said that the next hearing of its ongoing Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court, asking for an improved regulatory system for GMOs is coming up on 29th April, 2009.  The PIL was filed in 2004 after Gene Campaign failed to get a response from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to concerns that has been expressed by a range of experts and stakeholders.

 

Below is a chronology of events in the ongoing 2004 PIL along with Interim Applications, as well as a fresh PIL filed in 2007 to block the deregulation of GM food imports.

Some key recommendations made by experts and stakeholders for better GM regulation and DBT’s rebuttals are also given.
