Initiated
the national campaign against patenting of seeds: first
brought into focus that TRIPS would have a devastating effect
on agriculture and livelihood of rural communities. Lobbied
with political parties to ensure that farmers' traditional
rights and security became an issue in and out of Parliament.
Launched a
seven-year campaign that culminated in a strong national
legislation to secure farmers' rights.
Prepared the
first draft of the document which took the shape of the
National Biodiversity Bill.
Provided
leadership to efforts to forge an agenda for developing
country for protection of bioresources, rights of farming and
rural communities and recognition of indigenous knowledge
especially in the context of WTO/TRIPS.
Provided
simple and easily understood analysis of treaties like WTO,
International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources, Convention on
Biological Diversity etc. in regional languages for public
education and mobilisation.
Worked with
farmers' organizations, particularly in tribal areas, to
educate and organize them against powerful interests that
threaten their survival.
Got
protection for indigenous knowledge in the Indian Patent
Amendment Bill and succeeded in blocking gene and cell
patents.
Filed Public
Interest Litigation in the Delhi High Court to restrain the
Government of India from joining UPOV Convention, which is
against the interests of the farmers.
