CIVIL SOCIETY INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP ON CLIMATE CHANGE: AREAS OF
POLICY AND ACTION

An interactive workshop was organised, by
Gene Campaign, CECOEDECON, Food Trade and Nutrition Coalition
Asia, Institute of Development Studies (IDS) - Jaipur, and
PAIRVI to discuss issues related to climate change and decide
on actions and policies needed to reduce its impact. More than
50 civil society groups participated in the workshop held on
29th July 2009 at Indian Habitat Centre - New
Delhi.
Highlights of the workshop:
Nitin Desai :
Former under secretary general of United Nations discussed the
issues relating to the Kyoto Protocol and the December
Copenhagen summit. He emphasised the importance of awareness
programs and improving standards for health and sanitation,
and also underlined the need for international support to
combat climate change. Dr Suman Sahai (Gene Campaign)
discussed agriculture related problems, energy conservation,
and rising food prices. She emphasised the need for working on
both mitigation and adaptation in agriculture and explained
how this can be done.
Ranghunandan :
(Delhi Science Forum) talked about the international
negotiations and the priorities of Annexure-I and Annexure-II
countries in climate change negotiations. He also gave a brief
background on IPCC Fourth Assessment report and explained the
post and pre Kyoto Protocol developments.
R. Kavi- (RIS) made a
presentation on the impact of trade and biodiversity due to
climate change. The policies like cap and trade approach,
standard-based policy, and carbon taxes were discussed.
Tirthankar Mandal and
Shirish Sinha : (WWF)
explained about IPR and barriers in technology transfer. They
spoke about technology development, diffusion and deployment.
They also discussed NAPCC’s eight missions.
Surjit Singh :
(IDS) spoke on health and changed weather conditions. He
discussed the relationship between climate change and zoonotic
diseases, mosquito related diseases, vector born diseases and
water born diseases.
Linu Mathew Phillip :
(CENTAD) spoke a issue relating to transport and suggested
that car users should to plant at least five or six trees to
compensate the carbon emitted by their cars.
Vanita Suneja :
(Oxfam India) presented her views on
poverty; development and climate change and said that the
climate change issue is an equity issue.
