DoNER initiates climate change project
SHILLONG: The Union Ministry of Development of Northeastern
Region (DoNER) has initiated the Climate Change Adaptation
North-eastern Region (CCANER) Project in partnership with the
German Development Cooperation and the State Governments of
Meghalaya, Nagaland and Sikkim to strengthen the rural
livelihood resilience and also adaptability to the impacts of
climate variability and change.
The German Development Cooperation would focus on capacity
development of the people, institutions and organizations of
these three North-east States, official sources said.

From rags to the Durban Climate
Change conference
What do you need to visit a foreign city and deliver a lecture
on climate change? A high-profile persona, an elite degree,
and the right connections, perhaps.
However, Sushila Sable, 48, an illiterate ragpicker from
Kanjurmarg doesn’t have any of the above. But her concern
towards clean garbage disposal, which motivated 3,000 city
ragpickers to form the Parisar Bhagini Vikas Sangh, was enough
to have her speak at the Durban climate change conference a
week ago.
China’s climate change rubs off on
India
India has said it is open to negotiate on mitigation issues at
the Durban climate talks but said developed countries have to
show clear commitment to reduce their carbon footprints. The
Indian response makes the chances of the global ministerial
level talks on climate change yielding clear solutions as
China too said it favoured legally binding carbon emissions
cuts on Monday.
Climate change dialogue at Durban
keenly poised
The 17th Conference of Parties (COP) under the UN Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) is being held in Durban,
South Africa, from November 28 to December 9, 2011.
Urgent action is required to arrest the inexorable rise in
global CO2 emissions. What are the issues before this
important international meeting on Climate Change?
The last meeting of the COP was held in Cancun, Mexico, in
December 2010. The 17th COP will naturally take stock of the
progress in the decisions taken at the Cancun meeting and will
come up with the new decisions.
