Discussion on Legal Protection of Indigenous Knowledge of Bioresources
Gene Campaign had organised a
public discussion on Legal
Protection of Indigenous Knowledge of Bioresources, on 20
December, at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The discussion was
based on the outcome of a two-year research programme to identify the
components of a legal regime that could be used to protect the IK related
to bioresources and to assess whether existing legal instruments could be
amended to protect IK or whether there is a need for a new sui generis
legislation to protect the intellectual property of farming and tribal
communities.

Training
Programme on Agbiodiversity and Agbiotechnology
Gene Campaign had organised a
training programme on Agrobiodiversity,
Agbiotechnology and Food Security for Asian CSOs at Asian Institute
of Technology in Bangkok from 27 - 29 November 2006. The workshop was
conducted under the aegis of the Food Trade and Nutrition Coalition -
Asia. The aim of the training programme was to build
capacity among Asian Civil Society groups on these critical issues related
to food and livelihood security..

UNEP : Billion
Tree Campaign
The United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) is soon to launch a major worldwide tree planting
campaign. The Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign encourages
people, communities, organizations and governments to enter tree
planting pledges on a
website ,
with the goal of planting at
least one billion trees worldwide during 2007. Each pledge can be anything
from a single tree to ten million trees. The inspiration for the campaign
came from Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate for 2004
and founder of Kenya’s Green Belt Movement, which has planted more then 30
million trees in 12 African countries since 1977.

CGIAR Virtual
Library
The CGIAR Virtual Library is a
website from which a user can search the online libraries of agricultural
research centres sponsored by the Consultative Group on International
Agricultural Research (CGIAR). This website also offers access to other
leading databases used by development professionals. These include those
of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the London School of
Economics, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and
the Library of Congress as well as 4,000 online journals. A researcher can
find thousands of full-text documents, abstracts, or references related to
development, agriculture, hunger, and poverty through the website.

Public Debate on
Genetically Engineered
Crops and Foods
Gene Campaign has conducted a series of public debates and
discussions on Genetically Engineered Crops/Foods and their relevance to
Indian agriculture and small farmers.
Between
March-August 2006, discussions have been held in Jaipur, Pune, Bhopal,
Nagpur, Lucknow and New Delhi in partnership with local organizations with
whom Gene Campaign has been working.

Bt Technology Adoption
study in Vidarbha

Campaign is conducting a study in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra on
the nature of Bt. cotton technology adoption. This study is a social
science enquiry in terms of
economics
of
Bt. Cotton,
its
effect on the indebtedness of farmers and on the livelihood opportunities
for Agriculture labor and small farmers.

Field Gene / Seed Banks
Eight
Gene-Se ed Banks have been
set up already in Jharkhand in Kacchabari, Kulli, Pannakhunti, Icchak and
Birsa Agricultural University and another three are in the process of
being established in Adampur, Kerua in Nalanda and Ganeshpura
A total
of 1993 samples of traditional varieties of rice, millets, legumes and
vegetables have been collected, characterized and processed for storage in
the Gene-Seed Banks. These consist of 1820 varieties of rice, 11 varieties
of millets, 90 of legumes and 72 varieties of vegetables.

Using RTI
Act
Gene
Campaign has sought information from the Ministry of Environment and
Forest (MoEF) on specific issues related to GM crops like Risk and Cost
benefit analyses of GM crops, various GM crops under trial, Bt Cotton
approval, food and feed safety tests, regulatory competence etc, and has
asked for permission to inspect all the files and file notings dealing
with bio-safety testing of Bt Cotton leading to its approval for
commercial release. The information was requested through six different
applications in December 2005

of Rs 1526 that it had charged Gene Campaign for photocopying
documents related to the query filed under RTI on biosafety tests for Bt
cotton.
