GENE CAMPAIGN ON THE MOVE

AT INDIA SOCIAL FORUM 2006...

Gene Campaign participated in India Social Forum-2006 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi from 9th to 13th November. The main objective was to make the people and different organizations participating in the event aware of genetically engineered foods and crops.  In addition to this, a sincere attempt was made to create awareness about the importance of indigenous varieties (of seeds), different legislations related to farmers’ rights etc. For this purpose, Gene Campaign circulated pamphlets, informative booklets and posters. It is interesting to note that the poster related to vermi- compost was in maximum demand.

Gene Campaign also organized a workshop on “Genetically Engineered Foods and Crops” on 12th November, during ISF-2006.  People showed keen interest to know about GE foods and crops.  The campaign highlighted the fact that people lack knowledge and information regarding GE foods and crops, underscoring the importance of such campaigns in future.

AT IITF - 2006...

Gene Campaign participated in the 26 India International Trade Fair-2006 that was organized at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi from 14th - 27th November.For awareness purposes Gene Campaign circulated pamphlets and hired two individuals, dressed like cartoon characters named ‘Lala-Lali’, who distributed the promotional materials to the visitors in their unique funny style.

Training on Training on Agrobiodiversity &  Agrobiotechnology

Gene Campaign organized a training programme on Agro-biodiversity, Agbiotechnology and Food Security for Asian CSOs at Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok from 27th to 29th November, 2006.  The workshop was conducted under the aegis of the Food Trade and Nutrition Coalition – Asia.

The overreaching goal of the training was to build the knowledge capacity among participant CSOs regarding the technical and socio-political issues related to agro-biodiversity and GEOs as well as their relationship with food sovereignty and food security.  In order to spread awareness about the issues, it is the FTN coalition’s hope that this training will be a stepping stone for participating CSOs to conduct their own workshops.  This will further allow CSOs to effectively monitor Government policies, engage with policy makers and legitimately contribute to policy making.
