  Jan Sunwai on the Agrarian Crisis

JAN SUNWAI ON THE AGRARIAN CRISIS

A Jansunwai was organized on 30th March, 2007 in New Delhi at Jantar Mantar to address the issues of the Agrarian Crisis in India and to frame a set of recommendations to resolve them. Gene Campaign, Madhya Pradesh Kisan Sangharsh Samiti and INSAF organized the Jan Sunwai. Farmers, consumers, experts and citizens attended it from various parts of the country. Views and evidence were presented to a Commission consisting of Justice Rajendra Sachar, Sri Prabhash Joshi (Sr Editor Jan Satta), Mr Sanjay Parikh (Advocate Supreme Court) and Swami Agnivesh (President, World Council of Arya Samaj). To address the agrarian crisis, the following recommendations were made. A full report is being prepared. 

Ø      Input costs should be reduced.

Ø      Markets must be made available for agricultural produce

Ø      A good market price must be provided for the agro products.

Ø      For farmers credit should be made available at low interest rates

Ø      Extension system should be revived to solve problems in the field.

Ø      There should be a proper system to address the issue of water scarcity

Ø      Adequate water for irrigation should be provided.

Ø      Conserve Agro Bio-Diversity in Gene and Seed banks.

Ø      Increase budget outlay for Agriculture in every Five Year plan of Govt of India.

Ø      Agricultural land should not be given to SEZ.

Ø      The use of Genetically Modified Seeds be stopped and organic agricultural practices be encouraged.

Ø      Farmers Right law to be implemented immediately.

Ø      Investments should be made to restore soil health

Ø      Agriculture should be diversified with introduction of new varieties

Ø      The agenda on land reform be completed at the earliest.
